June 2024 Newletter

From the desk of Dr. Brown…...

Hello Excel Family!

Happy June! Warmer weather, sunshine, family time, it’s finally here.

With that comes outside activities we have not done in many months! Baseball, soccer, walking, hiking, biking, gardening, cutting grass, and the list goes on.

Excel has already seen MANY of you for lower back pain, upper back and neck strains from digging, raking, carrying 40 pound bags of potting soil, biking and hiking. But did you know…..we have also seen many people with headaches, sinus issues, spring allergies and other non-muscle and joint related pains?

How can that be? How does chiropractic help these people?

Are you ready for a quick course in neurology, ie) your nervous system? I promise to keep it simple!

OK, Part 1.

1. We all have a brain. (ok, I can hear the jokes out there already! ?)

2. There is an extension of nerves off the back/bottom part of your brain like a tail, that extends down your back to your tailbone. That’s called the spinal cord. (Speaking of tail, the very end of the spinal cord is called the Cauda Equina, which means horse tail!)

3. The brain and spinal cord are protected by the skull and vertebral column, ie) your back bone

4. Smaller nerve roots come off the spinal cord and exit between the vertebrae. These are called spinal nerve roots. These smaller spinal nerve roots go to every tissue, organ, gland, muscle, literally every cell in the body!

5. This system of nerves is a 2-way communication highway between the brain and the body.

6. The job of your Central Nervous System is to control and coordinate the FUNCTION of your body in order to adapt to your current environment, within milli-seconds! keeping us alive and well.

7. When a part of that system has interference, some part of your body is not going to work well. Still with me?? Here’s Part 2….

There are 3 parts to your nervous system:

1. Motor nerves. These nerves control muscles

2. Autonomic nerves. Think “automatic”. These nerves control organs, glands, blood vessels, etc.

3. Sensory nerves. These nerves transmit pain.

Here is the kicker……..only 10% of the nervous system is Sensory nerves! 10%!! Surprised?

The other 90% is motor and autonomic nerves. These nerves control and coordinate things like joint position, muscle tone, muscle strength, muscle movement that is correct for the given situation, hear beat, breathing, digestion, elimination, immunity, and endocrine system! If these nerves have interference, you may not have the typical “muscle or joint” pain. You will have other “symptoms” like watery eyes, headache, low energy, breathing problems, indigestion, weakness, muscle spasms. Are you getting the picture?

Part 3, and we are done, I promise…..

There a 5 things that cause nerve interference:

1. Cutting

2. Burning

3. Freezing

4. Drugs

5. Pressure

You have all experienced #5! You sleep or sit on your hand or foot too long and it will become numb or tingle. Lucky you, you compressed a few Sensory nerves that gave you the warning that you need to move your hand!

The other area of the body where nerve roots can get pressured is in the spine where the nerve roots exit the spinal cord between the vertebra. Remember, only 10% of all nerves are sensory! 90% have no sensation. They are motor and autonomic nerves! Your spine could be out of alignment, pressing on a motor or autonomic nerve. Whatever organ, gland or system those nerves control and coordinate will have less guidance from the brain thus fall out of harmony, homeostasis, wellness and fall into a state of “Dis – Ease”, disharmony, and illness. Sometimes symptomatic right away, but many times not. Or you are not recognizing these symptoms being due to pressure on a nerve!

Long story short……SEE YOU CHIROPRACTOR AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH TO FIND AND REMOVE ANY AND ALL POINTS OF PRESSURE ON YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM.

Why? So your body can adapt correctly to the given environment,24/7, thus maintaining its health and existence.

Office News

Did you tune in to the radio? Or see us in the paper?

This past month was National Correct Your Posture Month and I hit the road.

I was featured on the LifeMatters with Tom and Nancy at WLKG and discussed the importance of posture as it relates to your health.

We also want to encourage spinal health and good posture right from the beginning so we made a visit to St. Francis Grade School and spoke with 4K and 5K students about the importance of posture and caring for our spines.

If you missed it, you can see all the fun in the Wednesday May 29th issue of the Lake Geneva Regional News. We at Excel Family Chiropractic love caring for our patients and our community.
